About This Blog

This blog is about anything and everything to do with Graphic Design.

Who Is Erica?

I am a Graphic Design student in my second year. I have worked at Woolworths for five years and have had three years experience in Retail Operations.

I am interested in illustration (hand-drawn or computer generated), advertising (such as business card and poster design) and also textiles (such as making clothing, keyrings and pencil cases). I also intend to get my Diploma Certificate for Graphic Design.

Style/ Typography: Uses image in the place of text in a creative way, soft colours, hand-drawn
illustrations, simple layout and takes advantage of space, informative and easy to understand.

Quality: Lightweight card, good quality colour, tidy and professional looking.

What Attracted Me: The colourful illustrations, large lettering, layout and typographic style.

What Attracted Me: The bright colours, the fact it was a free zine and the compact size.

Leaflet/ Poster

Function: To inform about an event.

Location: TAFE Campus, Tighes Hill

Style/ Typography: Sleek and modernised, thick stroke in bold type (deco-like style), eyes are drawn immediately to the single section of colour which speaks for the exhibition itself (the tools of the trade). Artwork blends with the text well (also gives it a 3-dimensional look).

Quality: High quality colour printed on glossy paper.

What Attracted Me: The artwork, primary colours and large typography.

Packaging

Function: To hold items of purchase and promote business.

Location: Blackbird Corner, Darby St. Newcastle.

Style/ Typography: Single printed graphic in the center keeps this design simple and neat. Old fashioned script typography.

Quality: Recycled brown paper bag (though it is not very strong it still gives a sense that the business is environmentally cautious).

What Attracted Me: The simplicity of the design (this also has inspired me for my own point of sale for the Art Bazaar).

Postcard

Function: To promote an artist's work. Made for sending via mail.

Location: Blackbird Corner, Darby St Newcastle.

Style/ Typography: Bubbly in appearance, fun, uses various shades/ tints of a single colour (orange) and a story is happening within the frame but still uses some space in the very centre to balance out.

Quality: Relatively thick card, high quality colour and glossy on front (image)/ rough on back making it easier to write on.

What Attracted Me: The bright orange, the playful appearance and the fact it was free.

Game Box Cover

Function: To promote a game and its content by using attractive illustrations which will appeal to various age groups.

Location: EB Games, Westfield Kotara.

Style/ Typography: Cute graphics, large bubbly typography with simple drop shadow effect, overly colourful and will appeal to mostly young children and uses a variety of different shapes and gives a 3-dimensional look.

Quality: High quality and looks really professional.

What Attracted Me: The colours mainly and the fact I have been a kirby follower for a few years now. The graphics were very appealing to me.
